Nebraska Volleyball Coach's Contract Extension Includes Unique Horse-Purchasing Incentive

Nebraska women's volleyball coach John Cook has signed a contract extension that includes a hefty salary increase and a unique incentive: a $70,000 retention bonus to help him purchase a horse.

John Cook, a coaching icon in the women's college volleyball world, has inked a contract extension that will keep him at the helm of the Nebraska Cornhuskers for the foreseeable future. The new deal not only comes with a substantial salary increase but also includes an unusual bonus provision: funds dedicated to Cook's goal of purchasing a horse.

While Cook's salary will be contingent on the volleyball team's performance, he is guaranteed a $70,000 retention bonus that will be specifically earmarked for the acquisition of a horse. In a statement, Cook explained the rationale behind this unconventional contract amendment.

"When I discussed my contract with athletic director Troy Danner, I suggested that instead of an annual salary increase, I would prefer if the athletic department supported my desire to purchase a horse from a ranch in central Nebraska," Cook said.

The horse that Cook has his eye on, known as No. 415, holds special significance. According to Cook, the animal was born and bred at the Pitzer Ranch in Ericson, Nebraska, and possesses exceptional performance capabilities.

"No. 415 is a once-in-a-lifetime performance horse," Cook said.

To circumvent the university's inability to directly allocate funds for horse purchases within a coaching contract, the retention bonus will serve as a creative workaround.

"Troy loved the idea and while he couldn't specifically write that into the contract, the retention bonus will be used for No. 415. I am honored that Troy was so supportive of my request."

The horse-related incentive is a testament to Cook's passion for horsemanship and his belief that it aligns with his aspirations for the volleyball program.

"Horses have always been a part of my life, and I believe there are many parallels between horsemanship and coaching volleyball," Cook said. "Both require patience, dedication, and a deep understanding of the athlete or horse."

Cook's unwavering commitment to excellence has made him one of the most successful coaches in women's volleyball. Since taking over the Nebraska program in 2000, Cook has led the Cornhuskers to four NCAA championships and 13 conference titles. His teams have consistently ranked among the nation's elite, with last season's record of 30-2 being a prime example.

Cook's leadership extends beyond the volleyball court. He is known for his mentorship of players both on and off the court, instilling in them the values of hard work, discipline, and teamwork.

The Nebraska volleyball program has a rich tradition and a passionate fan base. Last August, a record-breaking number of supporters packed Memorial Stadium - the home of the Nebraska football team - for "Volleyball Day," showcasing the immense popularity of the sport in the state.
