Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced that Al Jazeera will no longer be allowed to broadcast from Israel, and Israeli officials have confiscated equipment from the Associated Press for violating the country's new media law.
The decision to ban Al Jazeera was made after the Israeli government accused the news station of being a "terrorist channel" and "Hamas' mouthpiece." Netanyahu also claimed that Al Jazeera had "harmed Israel's security, actively participated in the October 7 massacre, and incited against IDF soldiers."
The AP, on the other hand, was accused of violating the new media law by providing images to the satellite channel Al Jazeera. The Israeli government seized the AP equipment from a location in southern Israel.
The AP has decried the Israeli government's actions as "abusive" and said that the shutdown was not based on the content of the feed but rather an abusive use by the Israeli government of the country’s new foreign broadcaster law.
Several organizations have opposed the Israeli government's decision to stop AP's live feed coverage of northern Gaza. The Foreign Press Association called it "the latest in a series of chilling steps by the Israeli government to stifle the media."
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid wrote in a statement originally in Hebrew that "This is an act of madness."
The Israeli government has defended its decision to seize AP news equipment after the country banned Al Jazeera from broadcasting within Israel. The government claims that the new media law is necessary to protect Israel's security.
However, critics of the law say that it is too vague and could be used to silence dissent. They also argue that the ban on Al Jazeera is a violation of freedom of the press.
