Chinese game developer NetEase Games has announced a Responsible Payment Initiative for its casual game Eggy Party, employing facial recognition technology to limit player spending. This move aims to align with Chinese anti-addiction laws and promote responsible gaming habits.
Chinese gaming giant NetEase Games has announced a groundbreaking initiative to limit excessive spending in its popular casual game, Eggy Party. Effective April 29th, 2024, the game will implement facial recognition technology as part of a Responsible Payment Initiative. This move is aligned with China's stringent anti-addiction laws and is aimed at promoting responsible gaming behavior.
According to the announcement, players who spend over RMB 198 (approximately $27) will receive a responsible payment reminder detailing their spending habits. Before making further purchases, they must acknowledge this notice. To further curb reckless spending, users who spend RMB 328 ($45) or more within a 24-hour period will be restricted from making any additional purchases unless they pass facial recognition verification.
Most app stores already support facial recognition technology. However, for players downloading Eggy Party from the Huawei, Vivo, Oppo, or Xiaomi stores in China, a daily spending limit of RMB 328 will be enforced until these stores are updated to support facial recognition.
NetEase Games also plans to implement lower daily spending caps for accounts deemed high risk. This is not the company's first initiative aimed at curbing excessive spending. Just a week prior to announcing this Responsible Payment Initiative, the developer implemented a requirement for users over the age of 70 to use facial recognition when registering for the game. This measure was implemented to prevent young users from impersonating adults to make in-app purchases.
Eggy Party is a casual party royale game where players compete as adorable eggs in obstacle courses and arenas. The game features various mini-games and unlockable abilities, as well as a social aspect where players can explore Eggy Town, participate in concerts and soccer games, or simply hang out with friends.
The game is currently available on the App Store and Google Play. For more information and updates, visit the game's official website or follow it on social media platforms Facebook, Discord, Instagram, Twitter, or YouTube.
NetEase Games has been at the forefront of promoting responsible gaming practices in the industry. In addition to implementing facial recognition technology in Eggy Party, the company has also introduced other measures to combat addiction and excessive spending.
In 2021, NetEase Games implemented a real-time system that monitors player behavior and adjusts game difficulty accordingly. The system tracks indicators such as spending habits, game time, and physiological responses to prevent players from developing unhealthy gaming habits.
NetEase Games has also partnered with mental health organizations to provide resources and support to players struggling with gaming addiction. The company believes that responsible gaming is an essential part of creating a healthy and enjoyable gaming environment for all.
NetEase Games' Responsible Payment Initiative for Eggy Party is a significant step towards promoting responsible gaming practices in the industry. The use of facial recognition technology to limit excessive spending is an innovative and effective approach that aligns with China's anti-addiction laws.
By implementing this initiative, NetEase Games demonstrates its commitment to creating a safe and enjoyable gaming environment for all players. The company's efforts to promote responsible gaming are commendable and should serve as an example for other game developers in the industry.
