Mets owner Steve Cohen hints at possible roster shakeup as team struggles despite high payroll
The New York Mets, once hailed as the Amazin's, are facing yet another disappointing season despite amassing a sky-high payroll. After winning 101 games in 2022, the team plummeted to a 75-87 record last year and currently sits at 19-23.
The Mets' struggles have raised questions about the team's direction, especially with key players such as Pete Alonso, Jose Quintana, and J.D. Martinez set to become free agents after the season.
Mets owner Steve Cohen has remained optimistic, publicly stating that he believes in the team and expects them to make the playoffs. However, a recent social media post by Cohen has hinted at a potential roster shakeup.
In a now-deleted tweet, Cohen responded to a post suggesting that the Mets should "blow it up" by saying, "All in the future. Not much we can do until the trade deadline."
Cohen later clarified his comments to SNY, the team's broadcast network, saying, "I believe in this team. I believe in the back of the baseball card. It's way too early to speculate on anything. It's May 16. I expect to make the playoffs."
However, the Mets' recent struggles have cast doubt on Cohen's optimism. The team started the season 0-5 before going on a 12-3 stretch. Since then, they have gone 7-15.
The Mets' poor start has been attributed to a variety of factors, including injuries to key players and inconsistent performances from the pitching staff. The team has also struggled to score runs, ranking near the bottom of the league in several offensive categories.
If the Mets continue to struggle, Cohen may have no choice but to sell at the trade deadline, as he did last year when the team dealt away Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, Mark Canha, and Tommy Pham.
The Mets have a talented core of players, but they have yet to put it all together. With the trade deadline approaching, Cohen will have to make a decision on whether to continue to invest in this team or to start the rebuilding process.
Despite Cohen's public optimism, it is clear that the Mets are at a crossroads. The team's performance in the coming weeks will determine their fate and the direction of the franchise for years to come.
