Due to security concerns voiced by players, the NFL has implemented increased security measures for its first-ever game in Brazil. The matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers will take place in São Paulo on Sunday.
As the NFL continues its global expansion, it is taking extra precautions to ensure player safety in Brazil ahead of its first-ever game in the South American nation. The NFL's Week 1 matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo has raised concerns among some Eagles players about the city's safety record.
Wide receiver A.J. Brown stated that he received a list of "don't do's" ahead of the trip, while cornerback Darius Slay Jr. expressed concerns similar to Brown's. Slay emphasized that players had been advised to stay within the hotel and avoid exploring the streets of São Paulo.

Slay questioned the NFL's decision to host a game in Brazil due to the perceived safety risks, especially considering the possibility of terrorist activity. He expressed that his family would not be joining him on the trip. Slay later apologized for his comments on social media, clarifying that he did not intend to offend anyone.
The São Paulo state government has responded to these concerns by announcing that military police will provide increased protection to the teams upon their arrival at Guarulhos Airport and during their movements between hotels, training sites, and the stadium.

This is not the first time the NFL has faced safety concerns for games played outside the United States. The league has held games in Mexico since 2005, despite concerns over crime and drug violence in that country.
Despite the concerns, the Eagles and Packers will be heading to Brazil on Wednesday to begin preparations for the season opener. Both teams are projected to be playoff contenders in 2023, adding significance to the game's outcome.

The NFL's expansion into South America represents a growing trend of international sports events. Major League Baseball has held regular-season games in Mexico and Japan, while the NBA has played games in countries such as China, England, and Mexico.
Balancing player safety with the goal of promoting the sport globally presents challenges for sports leagues. The NFL's decision to increase security for its first game in Brazil reflects the importance it places on player well-being while seeking to expand its reach.
As the NFL's presence on the international stage continues to grow, it will be crucial for the league to address safety concerns and implement measures to mitigate risks while also respecting the cultural differences of host countries.
