Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs turned himself in to Tuscaloosa, Alabama authorities on May 25, 2024, facing two counts of animal cruelty. The charges stem from allegations that Buggs left two dogs severely malnourished and neglected at a rental property earlier this year.

Upon turning himself in and posting bond, Buggs declined to comment on the charges when approached by reporters, shielding his face with his hand and directing his bail bondsman to drive him away.

According to court documents, police received reports on March 28, 2024, that dogs were being neglected on the back porch of a Tuscaloosa rental home. Witnesses stated that Buggs had moved out of the property on March 19, owing over $3,100 in unpaid rent.

Upon investigation, officers found a gray and white pit bull and a black rottweiler on the porch, both in poor physical condition. The pit bull was loose within a screened-in area, while the rottweiler was confined to a metal cage exposed to direct sunlight. Neither dog had access to food or water.

The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation, which led to the issuance of warrants for Buggs' arrest. He has been charged with two misdemeanors for animal cruelty under Alabama law.

The pit bull was euthanized due to its severe medical condition, while the rottweiler currently resides at the Tuscaloosa County Metro Animal Shelter.

Buggs joined the Chiefs on their practice squad in January 2023, shortly before their Super Bowl victory. Although he did not play in any games for Kansas City, he received a Super Bowl ring for his contributions to the team.

Prior to joining the Chiefs, Buggs played for the Detroit Lions for 10 games in the 2022 season, recording 12 tackles and one sack.

Neither the Chiefs nor Buggs' representatives have responded publicly to the charges. The team has had a tumultuous offseason, with several players facing legal issues, including second-year receiver Rashee Rice, who was involved in a car crash and allegedly struck a photographer at a nightclub in Dallas.

Buggs is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on June 8, 2024. If convicted of animal cruelty, he faces fines and potential jail time.

Animal welfare advocates have condemned Buggs' alleged actions, emphasizing the importance of responsible pet ownership and the serious consequences of animal abuse.
