Alabama coach Nick Saban has high praise for freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams, comparing him to a former Crimson Tide star.
Alabama's Nick Saban has a knack for identifying and developing talented players, and his latest discovery is freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams. After watching Williams' impressive performance during Saturday's game against Texas, Saban couldn't help but draw comparisons to a former Crimson Tide standout.
Nick Saban Draws Similarities Between Ryan Williams and Former Alabama WR
"Ryan reminds me a lot of Calvin Ridley," Saban said. "He's got the same kind of speed, athleticism, and route-running ability. He's a very instinctive player who knows how to get open and make big plays."
Ridley, who played for Alabama from 2015 to 2017, was a dynamic playmaker who set numerous school records and won the 2017 Fred Biletnikoff Award as the nation's top receiver. He went on to become a first-round pick in the NFL Draft and has established himself as one of the league's most promising young wideouts.
Saban's comparison is high praise for Williams, who has quickly emerged as a key contributor for the Crimson Tide. In just five games this season, the true freshman has caught 20 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns. His play has been a major factor in Alabama's undefeated start and has earned him a starting role on the team.
Williams' speed and quickness are reminiscent of Ridley's, as is his ability to find open space in the secondary. He has also shown a knack for making tough catches in traffic, a trait that Saban values highly in his receivers.
"Ryan is a very competitive player," Saban said. "He wants to be the best, and he's willing to put in the work to get there. I'm really excited about his future here at Alabama."
Saban's praise for Williams is not only a testament to the player's potential but also to the coach's keen eye for talent. Saban has a long history of developing elite receivers, including Julio Jones, Amari Cooper, and Jerry Jeudy, all of whom have gone on to successful NFL careers.
If Williams continues to develop at his current pace, he could be the next great Alabama receiver to make his mark in the NFL. With his speed, athleticism, and instinctive playmaking ability, he has all the tools to become a star.
And if Saban's comparison to Ridley holds true, Alabama fans could be in for a special ride over the next few years.
