Denise, Dominique, and Tanya Brown share their memories and emotions in the aftermath of the verdict that shocked the nation in 1995, reflecting on the numbness, shock, and ongoing complexities of their legacy.
The infamous O.J. Simpson verdict in 1995 left an enduring scar on the nation's psyche, and for the family of Nicole Brown Simpson, the pain and complexities linger to this day. On Wednesday, her sisters Denise, Dominique, and Tanya sat down for an interview on "Good Morning America," sharing their memories and emotions in the aftermath of the verdict that shocked the world.
"We were told by Judge [Lance] Ito, 'Nobody make a noise,'" recalled Denise Brown. "And then I heard [Ron Goldman's sister] Kim scream, and I just thought, 'Oh my God.' But I was in such shock, I couldn't scream. I was just numb."
The sisters' father, Louis Brown, took the children home after the verdict, and their mother, Juditha, instructed them to put on a brave face. "She said, 'Put a smile on your face when we walk in the door,'" Denise Brown said. "'Whatever was best for them,' is what she would always say."
Denise Brown admitted to feeling a sense of "relief" after Simpson passed away in April. However, Dominique Brown expressed the complications brought about by their relationship with Simpson's children, Justin and Sydney. "It's very complicated. But I have a relationship with the kids that means everything to me, and I was... very, very sad for them," she said.
The siblings also discussed their father, O.J. Simpson, whom they rarely mention to Justin and Sydney, who have families of their own. "I don't know what kind of a relationship they had with him," Dominique said. "I'm there to love on them, and I'm there to love on their children."
The sisters are also featured in a new documentary, "The Life and Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson," set to air in early June. They told Sawyer that the film contains a wealth of fond memories of Nicole. "It's the voice of Nicole that we wanted to hear. We want to have people hear it, we want to have people get to know her," Denise Brown said. "Because so many people said, 'We don't even know what she sounds like... who is Nicole?'"
In a trailer for the documentary, the sisters reveal that Nicole had been living in fear of Simpson before the murder. "She always thought he was going to hurt her," one of the sisters said. "She always knew it."
The Brown family's legacy is one of resilience and strength. Despite the pain and trauma they have endured, they have found ways to heal and honor Nicole's memory. Their story serves as a poignant reminder of the lasting impact of domestic violence and the importance of seeking help for those in need.
