Thirty years after the infamous O.J. Simpson murder trial, Nicole Brown Simpson's sisters open up about their memories surrounding her life and death, including the horrifying moment they learned of her murder.
At the onset of "The Life & Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson," a producer instructs interview subjects to use specific names while discussing Nicole's life and the tragedy that engulfed her. Denise Brown, Nicole's outspoken older sister, promptly declares, "There's only one name I don't want to say, if you don't mind."
This name, of course, belongs to O.J. Simpson, the former football star who was acquitted in the murders of Nicole and waiter Ron Goldman in 1994. The four-part documentary, which premiered on Lifetime, provides a deeply personal account of Nicole's life beyond her relationship with Simpson.
Denise, Tanya, and Dominique Brown are joined by celebrities like Kris Jenner and Faye Resnick, as well as friends and law enforcement officers who knew Nicole. Through their stories, they paint a complex portrait of a woman who faced years of abuse and stalking from her ex-husband.
"She said, 'He is never going to leave me alone. I'm never going to get rid of him,'" Denise recalls of one of the many times the couple reunited. "'I may as well go back to him.'"
Recalling their childhood and early adulthood, Nicole's sisters share happy memories that are overshadowed by the ever-looming presence of Simpson. Dominique recalls their once-lively vacation home in Laguna Beach becoming a place of tension whenever Simpson arrived.
"A pall would fall over the room," Dominique says. "I remember him grabbing her hand and twisting it, and she would just kind of smile and look into his eyes. You could tell she was terrified."
Police officer Terry Schauer unveils a chilling detail from a domestic violence call he responded to years before Nicole's murder, involving Simpson and his first wife, Marguerite. He recalls Simpson's violent behavior and Marguerite's hesitation to report it, citing her fear.
On the fateful night of June 12, 1994, Denise vividly remembers receiving the news of her sister's murder. "I hear this gut-wrenching curdling scream out of my parents' bedroom," she says. "My mom was on her knees, and my dad was on his elbow just looking up at her. I pick up the phone and I said, 'Who is this' and he said, ‘It’s [a detective].' … He says, 'Your sister's been killed.' I said 'Oh my God, he did it, he finally did it, oh my God.'"
In the aftermath of Nicole's death, her sisters grappled with their own guilt and the constant scrutiny of the media. They removed televisions from their home to shield the children from the relentless coverage.
Despite the trauma, Nicole's sisters have dedicated their lives to raising awareness about domestic violence. "I hope that by keeping her memory alive, the person that she really was, that maybe it could help someone out there who was another Nicole," says Robin Greer, a close friend of Nicole's.
Denise Brown, in particular, has become a vocal advocate against domestic abuse, vowing to continue speaking out about her sister's tragic life and death. "How could one person f--- up so many people's lives?" she says. "He f---ed up our whole family."
