The New York Police Department's Chief of Patrol has revealed that its intelligence division has pinpointed outside "infiltrators" as the instigators behind the violent turn in demonstrations at Columbia University. These individuals, known as "professional protesters," are associated with organizations not affiliated with the campus and have employed increasingly destructive tactics.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has made significant progress in its investigation into the violent clashes that erupted during protests at Columbia University on Tuesday night. According to NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell, the force's investigative unit has identified individuals from outside the university who played a key role in escalating the demonstrations.

Chell's comments came hours after Deputy Commissioner of Public Information Tarik Sheppard demonstrated the increase in protesters' tactics by bringing a massive chain and bike lock onto an MSNBC set. He described how NYPD officers faced significant challenges when entering Hamilton Hall through an upper window to detain protesters who had barricaded themselves inside.

The NYPD's intelligence division has played a crucial role in identifying the outside agitators, who have been linked to organizations not affiliated with Columbia University. Deputy Commissioner Sheppard confirmed that these individuals have been known to employ tactics such as dismantling cameras, barricading doors, and engaging in property destruction.

Chell also noted that as suspects were arrested during the operation, officers differentiated between Columbia students and non-students, with the latter being characterized as "outside agitators." He emphasized the role of these individuals in "radicalizing" some students and contributing to the escalation of tactics.

During Chief Chell's interview, a video clip of so-called "professional protester" Lisa Fithian was shown among the demonstrators on campus, highlighting her role in inciting the crowd.

Chell stressed that the NYPD's mission is to intervene in any situation where crimes are being committed, regardless of whether it occurs on private property. However, it is customary for the force to seek written requests for action from collegiate leadership.

In addition to the Columbia University unrest, the NYPD also responded to similar demonstrations at City College on Tuesday evening. Chell praised the professionalism and efficiency of NYPD officers, who have handled over 2,400 protests since October 7th's Hamas massacre in Israel.

He reiterated the NYPD's commitment to political neutrality and fairness, while maintaining firmness and professionalism. The chief also announced that 282 individuals have been charged in connection with the combined unrest at Columbia and City College, with most facing trespassing citations and other charges such as burglary and criminal mischief. Minor injuries were sustained by two individuals during the operation, but it was unclear whether they were law enforcement, protesters, or civilians.
