Esqueda, a 28-year-old five-year veteran of the force, was ambushed early Thursday morning while on the phone with another detective as part of the search. He was found riddled with bullet holes in his vehicle, and despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez expressed his condolences to Esqueda's family and vowed to bring the killer to justice. "Our hearts are heavy. He was an amazing young man taken far too soon," Gonzalez said. "He loved being a cop, and he leaves behind a tremendous void."

The manhunt for the suspect, Ronald "Ronnie" Palmer Jr., continues as he faces aggravated assault charges and is considered a person of interest in Esqueda's murder. Palmer, who was identified through surveillance footage, is described as heavy-set and tall with tattoos on both arms and long dreadlocks.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities exploring whether other individuals were involved. Esqueda was reportedly searching for the suspect in the pizzeria assault when he was ambushed.

Chief Deputy Mike Lee praised Esqueda's work ethic and dedication. "This group, every day, goes out and hunts down child rapists, homicide suspects, some of the most egregious criminals out there and that's what they do every day for a living," Lee said. "And he was very good at his job. Very well thought of."

Texas Governor Greg Abbott extended his support to local police as they seek the gunman. "Violence against law enforcement officers will never be tolerated in Texas," he said. State troopers and special agents are assisting in the manhunt.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office is asking for any information regarding the investigation. There is a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

"None of us are ever prepared for such an untimely death and our members need your prayers and support," Gonzalez said. "Our thoughts are with his family as they come to terms with this horrible news."
