Despite strong winds and high waves, search efforts will resume on Saturday morning for two swimmers who vanished from Lake Michigan on Friday.

Search operations are set to resume on Saturday morning for two boaters who went missing in Lake Michigan, off the coast of northwest Indiana, on Friday. The search was suspended late Friday evening due to deteriorating weather conditions, including strong winds and high waves.

The two men were part of a group of 10 individuals, including both adults and juveniles, who were aboard a boat approximately two and a half miles from Whiting, Lake Michigan, at around 2:30 p.m. when one of the men decided to go for a swim. However, he soon found himself struggling against the strong currents and began to call for help.

Members of the group attempted to maneuver the boat closer to the struggling swimmer but were unable to reach him due to the wind and waves. Desperate to assist their companion, a second man jumped into the water in an attempt to aid him. However, the second man also encountered difficulties, prompting a third man wearing a life jacket to enter the water. Unfortunately, this third individual became separated from the other two swimmers.

The man wearing the life jacket was eventually rescued by the Coast Guard around 4:30 p.m. and transported to a hospital for treatment of mild hypothermia. He has since been released.

The search for the two missing swimmers involves multiple agencies, including the Lake County Sheriff's Department, the Hammond Fire Department, the Hammond Police Department, and the Hammond Port Authority. Marty Benson, a representative from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, has confirmed that both missing individuals are residents of Illinois, one from Elk Grove Village and the other from Mount Prospect.

In addition to the search efforts in Lake Michigan, another rescue operation took place on Friday at Pere Marquette Park in Muskegon, Michigan, approximately 45 miles northwest of Grand Rapids. A teenage girl and a man were rescued from the lake, with the teenager initially being unresponsive but later regaining consciousness. The man was initially missing but was later located and brought to shore, where CPR was administered. According to local reports, his condition is currently listed as serious.

On Thursday, the Coast Guard successfully rescued two children and two adults from the waters off Galveston, Texas, after their vessel capsized. When the Coast Guard arrived on the scene, the four individuals were found clinging to the overturned boat. While the two children were wearing life jackets, the two adults were not. All four were safely transported to shore with no reported injuries.

Authorities continue to emphasize the importance of wearing life jackets when engaging in water activities. The unpredictable nature of weather conditions, combined with the inherent risks associated with swimming, underscores the need to prioritize safety measures.
