In a surprise appearance at the Democratic National Convention, Oprah Winfrey delivered a powerful speech condemning former President Trump's divisive rhetoric and emphasizing the importance of decency, respect, and civilized debate in American democracy.
Oprah Winfrey, the legendary talk show host, took the stage at the United Center in Chicago on Wednesday night, delivering a powerful and unexpected address at the Democratic National Convention. Her appearance sent shockwaves through the crowd, who erupted in thunderous applause and cheers.
In her speech, Winfrey did not mince words, directly criticizing former President Trump and his vice presidential candidate, Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio). She condemned Trump's divisive tweets, lies, and "foolery," emphasizing that such behavior has no place in American politics.

"We know all the old tricks and tropes that are designed to distract us from what actually matters," Winfrey told the audience. "But we are beyond ridiculous tweets and lies and foolery. These are complicated times, people, and they require adult conversation. And I welcome those conversations because civilized debate is vital to democracy, and it is the best of America."
Winfrey's speech was particularly poignant in light of her previous comments about Trump. In 2000, she had written a letter to him expressing her belief that he would be a good president. However, she has since distanced herself from those remarks, stating that she was "mistaken" at the time.

In her speech, Winfrey also took aim at Vance, who has faced criticism for his derogatory comments about "childless cat ladies." Winfrey emphasized that in times of crisis, we should not focus on personal characteristics or political affiliations but instead work together to help those in need.
"When a house is on fire, we don't ask about the homeowners' race or religion," Winfrey said. "We don't wonder who their partner is or how they voted. We just try to do the best we can to save them. And if the place happens to belong to a childless cat lady, well, we try to get that cat out, too. 'Cause we are a country of people who work hard for the money. We wish our brothers and sisters well. And we pray for peace."

Winfrey's speech resonated deeply with the audience, who saw her words as a call for unity and a return to civility in American political discourse. She emphasized that values and character matter, especially in leadership, and that decency and respect should be on the ballot in the upcoming 2024 election.
"Most of all," Winfrey said, "in leadership and in life, you know, this is true, that decency and respect are on the ballot in 2024. And, and just plain common sense over loyalty to any individual."
