Royall Elementary School in South Carolina is facing widespread backlash after pictures of staff members wearing "Border Patrol" T-shirts at a Hispanic heritage celebration event surfaced on social media. The district superintendent has condemned the incident as "inexcusable" and has fired or placed on administrative leave several employees involved.
The images, which have since been removed from the school's Facebook page, sparked outrage among community members and activists. Two staff members were photographed wearing gray "Border Patrol" T-shirts, while another photo showed staff members wearing sombreros and other attire and standing in front of a red brick wall with a "Royall Cantina" sign.

Florence 1 Schools Superintendent Dr. Richard O'Malley issued a statement expressing his "deep regret" for the incident and acknowledging the "serious nature" of the offense. He stated that an investigation into the situation was underway and that those responsible would be held accountable.
"What was posted, and the conduct of the staff involved, is inexcusable and not a representation of the school, its students and staff, or of our district as a whole," O'Malley wrote. "Today this matter has been thoroughly investigated and those who contributed to this event have been held accountable for their decision-making and actions."

O'Malley also issued a letter to all parents of the school district, informing them that several employees had been dismissed or placed on leave and that the district's assistant superintendent of elementary education and its STEM director would serve as "acting administrators."
Royall Elementary School issued its own statement, acknowledging the images and apologizing for the "insensitivity."

"It is with regret that we acknowledge that a picture that was posted on our Facebook page yesterday showed an insensitive disregard for the current challenges our Hispanic population faces," the statement read. "At Royall, we take great pride in our long-standing tradition of embracing and supporting every student who walks through the doors of our building."
The incident has sparked a broader discussion about cultural sensitivity and the importance of fostering an inclusive learning environment for all students. Many community members have condemned the staff's actions as both offensive and inappropriate for a school setting.

"It is incredibly alarming that school staff would display such insensitivity toward a marginalized community," said Maria Gonzalez, a local community activist. "This behavior sends a dangerous message to students and undermines the trust between the school and its diverse student population."
The district's administration has vowed to address the concerns raised by the incident and to implement measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
