The Green Bay Packers have bolstered their quarterback depth by trading for former Tennessee Titans quarterback Malik Willis. Willis, the third-round pick the Titans drafted in 2022, brings NFL game experience to a Packers' backup quarterback position previously held by untested second-year quarterbacks.
The Green Bay Packers have added a new backup quarterback to their roster, acquiring Malik Willis from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round pick.
Willis, a third-round pick by the Titans in 2022, provides the Packers with a backup quarterback who has seen NFL game action. He played in 11 games for the Titans over his first two NFL seasons, with three starts coming in his rookie year.
While Willis's passing statistics are modest—53.0% completion percentage, 350 yards, no touchdowns, and three interceptions—he has shown potential as a runner, with 32 carries for 144 yards and a touchdown.
Willis was considered one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft, but he fell to the third round and struggled in his rookie season. The Titans drafted Will Levis in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft, which essentially ended Willis's time in Tennessee.
The Packers had previously relied on second-year quarterbacks Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt as Love's backups, but neither had seen any game action in the NFL. Willis's experience will be invaluable to the Packers, who open the season next Friday against the Philadelphia Eagles in São Paulo, Brazil.
Willis's acquisition gives the Packers a more experienced and talented backup quarterback than they had before. He has the potential to develop into a starting-caliber quarterback, and his presence will allow the Packers to rest Love and give him time to develop without putting the team at a significant disadvantage.
In addition to his playing ability, Willis also brings a positive attitude and work ethic to the Packers. He is eager to learn and improve, and he is committed to helping the team succeed. Willis is a welcome addition to the Packers' roster, and he is expected to play a significant role in the team's success in 2023 and beyond.
