Pat Sajak, the beloved host of 'Wheel of Fortune' for 40 years, bid farewell to fans in an emotional speech during his final episode, expressing his gratitude for the privilege of being invited into their homes and thanking them for making the show a family affair.
In a bittersweet moment, Pat Sajak, the legendary host of "Wheel of Fortune," bid farewell to fans in an emotional speech during his final episode on Friday, January 13, 2023. The show, which has been a staple in American households for decades, has earned Sajak a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest host of the same game show.
Sajak's departure marks the end of an era for "Wheel of Fortune," which has been a part of American culture for nearly half a century. Since joining the show in 1982, Sajak has presided over more than 8,000 episodes, becoming synonymous with the iconic game. His witty banter with co-host Vanna White and his knack for creating a warm and inviting atmosphere have made him a beloved figure in the entertainment world.
In his heartfelt farewell speech, Sajak expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to have been a part of the show for so long. "It's been an incredible privilege to be invited into millions of homes night after night, year after year, decade after decade," he said. "I always felt that the privilege came with the responsibility to keep this daily half hour a safe place for family fun."
Sajak acknowledged that "Wheel of Fortune" had become more than just a game. "It was a place where kids learned their letters, where people from other countries honed their English skills, where families came together along with friends and neighbors, and entire generations," he said. "I'm honored to have had even a small part in all of that."
Sajak's speech was met with a standing ovation from the studio audience and an outpouring of emotion from fans on social media. "Thank you for allowing me into your lives," he concluded. "It's been an honor."
Vanna White, Sajak's co-host for 42 years, couldn't hold back tears as she bid farewell to her longtime colleague. "You made me who I am," she said, reflecting on their incredible journey together. "As much fun as we've had on camera, those memories, milestones, and life events we shared with our families outside the studio are my favorite."
White called Sajak "like a brother" to her, adding that he's a "true lifelong friend who I will always adore. I love you, Pat."
Their remarkable partnership has defied the odds, as both game show hosts and women over 40 are often replaced with alarming frequency. However, Sajak and White have made themselves as popular as the game itself, "yet they never allowed themselves to become bigger than the show," said Doug Eldridge, founder of Achilles PR.
While Sajak is retiring from the world of game shows, he already has a new gig booked. He's set to appear in a Hawaii stage production of a show called "Prescription: Murder."
Sajak's departure from "Wheel of Fortune" marks the end of an era, but his legacy will undoubtedly live on. For generations of fans, Sajak and White have been a constant presence in their homes, bringing joy, laughter, and a sense of community. Their contributions to American television will not be forgotten.
