Pat Sajak, the beloved host of "Wheel of Fortune," reveals that he initially hesitated to take on the role due to doubts about its career impact.
Pat Sajak, the iconic host of the long-running game show "Wheel of Fortune," has opened up about the pivotal moment that launched his remarkable career. In a heartfelt conversation with his daughter, Maggie Sajak, Pat shared his initial reservations about accepting the offer to host the beloved show.
As young Pat Sajak navigated the competitive world of local television in Los Angeles, he received an unexpected call from Merv Griffin, the visionary creator of "Wheel of Fortune." Griffin offered Pat the opportunity to become the new host, replacing Chuck Woolery, who had left the show in 1981.
Despite the allure of hosting a popular game show, Pat harbored doubts. "You're working in Los Angeles," Maggie remarked, "and one day you get a call from the creator of 'Wheel of Fortune,' Merv Griffin." With a touch of humility, Pat admitted, "When you work in L.A., in local TV, in a way you're auditioning every night, because the producers are sitting at home watching TV in their underwear like everybody else."
As Maggie chuckled at his self-deprecating humor, Pat continued, "Anyway, 'Wheel of Fortune' had been on the air for seven years in daytime on NBC, and the host was leaving, and they needed a new host, and he asked if I was interested. And I swear, the first thought was 'Yes there are three R's' is not exactly a career mover."
Maggie's expression conveyed both amusement and disbelief at his initial hesitance. However, Pat's self-reflection underscores the humility that marked his early career. "Yeah, I know, shows you what I know," he conceded with a wry smile.
Pat Sajak's journey to the iconic status he enjoys today began with humble roots. His career as a newscaster for a small radio station in his hometown of Chicago laid the foundation for his future success. After joining the Army in 1968 and serving in Vietnam, he landed in Nashville, Tennessee, where he embraced television. In 1977, a talent scout discovered Pat and offered him a weatherman position at the prestigious KNBC-TV station in Los Angeles.
Just four years later, Merv Griffin's transformative call gave Pat Sajak the opportunity to leave an enduring mark on the entertainment industry. Despite his initial reservations, Pat seized the moment, stepping into the role as host of "Wheel of Fortune." The game show had been airing in daytime television since 1975, but the nighttime version, which premiered in 1983, is the one that has cemented Pat Sajak's legacy.
Maggie Sajak astutely observed that a crucial element of the show's enduring allure was missing at the time Pat took over hosting duties: the beloved co-host Vanna White. White joined the show in 1982, bringing her radiant personality and enigmatic smile to the game.
Recalling Vanna White's first days on the show, Pat remarked, "After her audition, she was so nervous. Merv is smarter than I am, and he saw something in her and knew that the nerves would go away. And they did, and she's been a joy." With genuine warmth and admiration, Pat added, "I shudder to think how life could have been different."
As Pat Sajak reflects on his extraordinary career, he marvels at the enduring success of "Wheel of Fortune." When asked about the secret behind the show's longevity, he confesses, "If I knew, I'd be out creating other shows with the same secret and I'd be a wealthy man."
"Oh, I am," he quipped with a playful grin, acknowledging the immense financial rewards that have come with his career-defining role.
Pat Sajak's legacy as the congenial and charismatic host of "Wheel of Fortune" will forever be etched in the annals of television history. His journey serves as a testament to the power of following one's instincts and embracing opportunities, even when they seem unconventional. And as the show continues to captivate audiences, viewers can rest assured that Pat Sajak's presence will remain an integral part of the "Wheel of Fortune" experience for years to come.
