Paul Pierce, the Hall of Fame basketball legend, has suffered a gruesome finger injury that required surgery. The former Boston Celtics star shared graphic photos of the injury on his Instagram story, revealing a bent and bloodied right ring finger. Pierce is currently undergoing surgery to repair the damage.
It is unclear how Pierce sustained the injury, but he had posted podcast clips earlier in the day. Pierce said he was undergoing surgery and did not provide further details.
Pierce, 46, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2021 after a 19-year NBA career, including 15 seasons with the Celtics. He won his lone NBA title in 2008 over the Los Angeles Lakers.
The finger injury is not the worst injury Pierce has suffered in his life. In September 2000, he was stabbed 11 times at a nightclub in Boston and underwent lung surgery, just about a month before the start of his third NBA season.
Pierce is a 10-time NBA All-Star and was named NBA Finals MVP in 2008. He averaged 19.7 points on 44.5% shooting in his career.
The injury is a setback for Pierce, who had been enjoying a successful post-playing career as a basketball analyst for ESPN. He is also a part-owner of the Atlanta Hawks.
Pierce's injury comes as a reminder of the risks involved in playing basketball, even for retired players. Finger injuries are common in basketball, and they can be very painful and debilitating.
It is unclear how long Pierce will be out of action due to the injury. However, it is likely that he will miss some time while he recovers from surgery.
Pierce is known for his toughness and determination, and he is expected to make a full recovery from this injury.
