Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Paul Sewald's return to Citi Field on Saturday evoked bittersweet memories, as he found himself embroiled in a post-game altercation with Mets fans. Sewald, who pitched for the Mets from 2017 to 2020, closed out the Diamondbacks' victory, but his triumph was marred by an unpleasant encounter.

According to the New York Post, Sewald engaged in a verbal confrontation with fans shortly after the game. The reliever expressed disappointment that a fan had directed foul language towards him in front of children.

"I thought I had matured a little bit since I last pitched at Citi Field," Sewald told the Post. "But I get done with the game, and I got some P.O.S. just out there chirping and swearing, in front of kids, at me, and it just reminds me exactly of what I went through while I was here."

Sewald declined to disclose the specific insults hurled at him but emphasized his displeasure at the fan's behavior in the presence of youngsters.

"Can't print the stuff that [the fan] was saying," Sewald remarked. "Just disappointing he would do that in front of kids. He embarrassed himself. Just par for the course, I guess."

The encounter prompted Sewald to reflect on his tumultuous tenure with the Mets. He admitted that he had harbored a grudge against the team when he returned to Citi Field as a member of the Seattle Mariners in 2022.

"I also said some things that I probably wouldn't want printed," Sewald confessed. "It's just one of those things, it was frustrating that in a meaningless game, I didn't show any emotion, didn't feel like I took it over the top for him to do that, just disappointing."

Despite the post-game incident, Sewald has made a solid start to the 2024 season. In eight appearances, he boasts a 1.23 ERA and seven strikeouts, demonstrating his commitment to pitching excellence.

The Diamondbacks, however, find themselves stuck in the cellar of the National League West, with a record of 26-32. Their recent victory over the Mets snapped a five-game losing streak, providing a glimmer of hope amidst their struggles.

Sewald's altercation with Mets fans serves as a reminder of the passionate and sometimes hostile nature of sports fandom. While it is unfortunate that a moment of triumph was tainted by such an incident, Sewald's performance on the mound continues to speak volumes about his determination and class.
