Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes has taken Major League Baseball by storm with his blazing fastballs, devastating splitter, and electric presence. His rapid rise has captivated fans and has him among the favorites for National League Rookie of the Year.
Paul Skenes, the Pittsburgh Pirates' 21-year-old phenom, has quickly become a must-see attraction in Major League Baseball. Just one year after dominating college baseball at LSU, Skenes is already making waves in the show with his unhittable stuff.
In his debut at a sold-out PNC Park, Skenes dazzled the crowd with seven strikeouts, 102 mph fastballs, a 96 mph splitter, and a near 90 mph changeup. The buzz surrounding him continued in his second start in Chicago, where he struck out the first six batters he faced and finished with 11 strikeouts in six no-hit innings.
Skenes' electric performances have not gone unnoticed by oddsmakers. His strikeout prop opened at 6.5 for his first two starts, but after his dominant outing in Chicago, the number has jumped to 7.5. Despite the adjustment, bookmakers are still struggling to keep up with the demand for Skenes' props.
"It's interesting because 6.5 and 7.5 are worrisome numbers during football," said longtime bookmaker Dave Sharapan. "Not for strikeout props in the month of May."
The hype surrounding Skenes has also pushed down his odds to win National League Rookie of the Year. Before his debut, he was around 25-1, but now he's as short as 5-1. Only three other pitchers are favored ahead of him: Cubs' southpaw Shota Imanaga, Dodgers' righty Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Pirates teammate Jared Jones.
"These markets move exponentially," said Sharapan. "This isn't going from 20-1 to 18-1 and slow nudging the price down."
Skenes' dominance has also prompted DraftKings Sportsbook to adjust their season strikeout market. The number, which was initially set at 109.5 before his first start, has now risen to 152.5, a testament to his impressive start.
"They got to the right number," cracked Sharapan. "But that's a big ol' middle!"
Skenes' rapid rise has captivated Pirates fans and baseball enthusiasts alike. His electric stuff and the buzz he generates every time he takes the mound have brought a renewed sense of excitement to Pittsburgh. As he continues to develop and impress, the Pirates' ace is poised to become one of the most feared pitchers in the league.
