Spain's midfield maestro Pedri has been officially ruled out for the remainder of the European Championship after suffering a grade two sprain in his left knee. The 21-year-old limped off the field in tears during Spain's quarterfinal victory over Germany.
Spain's Euro 2020 campaign has been dealt a significant blow with the news that midfield sensation Pedri has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a knee injury.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Saturday that Pedri, who has been a key figure for Spain throughout the competition, sustained a "grade two sprain in his left knee" during the quarterfinal match against Germany.
The injury is expected to take several weeks to recover from, ruling the Barcelona star out of Tuesday's semifinal clash with France and the final five days later should Spain advance.
Pedri's absence is a major setback for Spain, who have relied heavily on the youngster's creativity and energy in midfield. He has started four of Spain's five matches at Euro 2020, missing only the final group game against Albania.
The RFEF stated that Pedri will remain with the Spain squad for the rest of the tournament, despite his injury.
Dani Olmo replaced Pedri in the eighth minute against Germany after the Spain youngster was forced off the field following a series of tough tackles from Toni Kroos. Olmo went on to score the opening goal in Spain's eventual 2-1 victory in extra time.
As a result of the yellow cards accumulated during the Germany match, Spain will also be without Álvaro Morata and Dani Carvajal for the semifinal against France.
Pedri's injury is a cruel blow for both player and team. The 21-year-old has been one of the standout players at Euro 2020 and was expected to be a key figure for Spain in their quest for a fourth European Championship title.
Spain will now have to find a way to fill the void left by Pedri's absence, with Olmo and Manchester City's Rodri among the potential candidates to step into his role.
Despite the setback, Spain coach Luis Enrique remains confident in his team's ability to overcome the odds and reach the final.
"We have a great squad with players who are ready to step up," Enrique said after the Germany victory. "We will miss Pedri, but we have other players who can make a difference."
Spain will face France in the semifinals on Tuesday, with the победитель going on to meet either England or Denmark in the final on Sunday.
