Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expresses strong disapproval of the invitation extended to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to address Congress next month.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has vehemently opposed the invitation extended to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to speak to Congress next month, declaring it "wrong." Pelosi, during an appearance on CNN, expressed her deep reservations about the decision, which she believes is inappropriate and counterproductive.
Pelosi recalled her disapproval of Netanyahu's previous speech to Congress in 2015, organized by then-Speaker John Boehner without consulting with Democratic leadership. She found the speech highly controversial, particularly Netanyahu's criticism of President Obama's nuclear agreement with Iran, which she viewed as "completely inappropriate."
The former House Speaker expressed concerns about Netanyahu's continued presence in power and the potential implications of his speech on the ongoing situation in Israel. She highlighted the ongoing conflict with Hamas, the suffering of the people of Gaza, and the need for a peaceful resolution. Pelosi believes that Netanyahu's presence in Washington will exacerbate tensions and hinder efforts towards a two-state solution.
In reference to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's statement that America's relationship with Israel "transcends one person or prime minister," Pelosi acknowledged Schumer's support for Israel but asserted that her disagreement with Netanyahu's policies does not equate to a lack of support for the nation. She emphasized that Israel has no stronger ally than Schumer.
Pelosi's stance aligns with many Democrats on Capitol Hill who have expressed dissatisfaction with Netanyahu's handling of the recent terrorist attack and the ongoing conflict with Hamas. Senator Schumer himself made headlines earlier this year when he called for Netanyahu's removal through an election, expressing concerns that his political survival had taken precedence over Israel's best interests.
Pelosi's opposition to Netanyahu's speech highlights the deep divisions within the Democratic Party regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and underscores the complex nature of the region's ongoing challenges. As Netanyahu prepares to address Congress, it remains to be seen how his presence will influence the debate and potentially affect future relations between the United States and Israel.
