Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi faced protests and accusations during a recent speech at the Oxford Union in the United Kingdom. Anti-Israel demonstrators interrupted her address, drawing attention to her support for the Israeli government.

Pelosi, a self-described "devout" Catholic, argued that populism in the United States poses a threat to democracy. She claimed that certain Americans, whom she labeled "poor souls who are looking for some answers," reject the perspectives of Democrats due to their beliefs on topics such as guns, homosexuality, and religious conservatism.

However, Pelosi's stance was challenged by Winston Marshall, a musician and podcast host. Marshall argued that the notion of populism has been manipulated by "elites" who have failed to align with their own narrative.

"Populism has become synonymous with racism, bigotry, and elitism," Marshall said. "Elites use it to show their contempt for ordinary people."

Marshall asserted that the change in the perception of populism is a recent phenomenon, pointing to a speech by then-President Barack Obama in 2016. According to Marshall, Obama claimed that both he and Bernie Sanders represented populism, but later shifted his usage of the term to associate it with authoritarianism.

Pelosi defended her position by contrasting the January 6 Capitol riots with the Portland BLM protests in 2020. She maintained that the former was an insurrection incited by the President of the United States, while the latter did not constitute an equivalent threat.

Marshall, in response, argued that violence and insurrection are not unique to populism. He stressed that populism represents the voice of the voiceless and that the true threat to democracy lies with elites. He also criticized Pelosi for her alleged elitism and her comments regarding the "poor souls" who hold differing views.

During her speech, Pelosi criticized mainstream media outlets and accused them of disdaining the general public. She asserted that Democrats should have focused on addressing the needs of the people, rather than trying to discredit former President Donald Trump.

Marshall also criticized the social media companies that suspended Trump's accounts after the January 6 Capitol protests. He accused them of censoring political opponents and collaborating with the elite establishment.

The Oxford Union event ultimately witnessed the motion "This House Believes Populism is a Threat to Democracy" passing with a vote of 177 to 68.
