The wounded officer's partner, who had initiated the traffic stop alongside his colleague, transported him to Temple University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel initially reported that four individuals were inside the vehicle stopped by officers, but later clarified that Vazquez was the sole occupant.

After initiating the stop, the officers discovered that Vazquez did not have a driver's license and the vehicle was not registered. As Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore explained, the officers had planned to tow and confiscate the car.

During an inventory of the vehicle, officers spotted a gun holster on the floorboard and confronted Vazquez. The man reportedly fled the scene and fired three shots at the officers. One officer was struck in the neck, while the other returned fire at least once.

Mayor Cherelle Parker expressed her concern and prayers for the injured officer. "As your mayor, it is not lost on me that today a husband, a father, and a son met his partner and went to work to do a job that he's been doing for about six and a half years," she said. "He didn't expect that he would be in a fight for his life right now."

Following two barricade situations, including a hostage situation, Vazquez was taken into custody. He has been charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, evading arrest, and related charges.

The three other individuals who arrived at the scene after the shooting are still part of the investigation but have not been charged at this time.
