The United States Army is embracing cutting-edge technology with the introduction of "pocket-sized" drones, empowering soldiers with real-time situational awareness and enhanced combat capabilities.
The United States Army is venturing into the realm of miniaturized unmanned aircraft systems with the introduction of the Black Hornet 3 drone. This compact device, measuring a mere 6.5 inches in length, is designed to provide soldiers with a bird's-eye view of their surroundings, aiding in reconnaissance and tactical planning.
Soldiers with the New York National Guard recently became the first unit of its kind to train with the Black Hornet 3, marking a significant milestone in the Army's pursuit of battlefield innovation. The tiny drone's ability to transmit live video and HD still images grants soldiers invaluable situational awareness, allowing them to navigate challenging terrain and detect potential threats from afar.

"Instead of a team making direct visual contact, this system can help a team monitor a named area of interest or area that they would otherwise be unable to due to terrain, time, or enemy disposition," explained Lt. Col. Gary Barney, commander of the 27th IBCT's 2nd Squadron, 101st Cavalry Regiment.
The Black Hornet 3's compact size and lightweight construction enable individual soldiers to carry the entire system as part of their standard combat load. This portability is a significant advantage, reducing the burden on troops and allowing them to deploy the drone quickly and efficiently.

"It's small and lightweight, and with how high it can go, you can't really hear it," said Army Staff Sgt. Andy Huang. "So, you can recon a lot of stuff, and the bad guys can't see it."
While the drone does have limitations, including a relatively short battery life and limited maneuverability in windy conditions, soldiers remain optimistic about its potential. The ability to gather real-time intelligence from a distance provides a critical edge in combat situations.

"For us, for the observers, it makes it easier for us to target rounds, especially with mortars," stated Spc. Jeffrey Anicet, a joint fire support specialist with 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery Regiment. "When working with aircraft on guided ordnance, we're able to precision drop along those coordinates exactly where we want them to the tenth of a meter."
The Army's investment in micro drones aligns with its broader modernization efforts, which aim to equip soldiers with the latest technologies to enhance their capabilities and protect their lives. The Black Hornet 3 is a testament to the Army's commitment to innovation and its relentless pursuit of technological superiority on the battlefield.

As the Army continues to train and evaluate the Black Hornet 3, it anticipates widespread deployment across its force, empowering soldiers with a powerful tool for reconnaissance, surveillance, and combat support. This small but mighty device has the potential to revolutionize military operations, providing soldiers with an unprecedented level of situational awareness and tactical flexibility.
