Politico's handling of the Maryland Senate race headlines has sparked controversy, with conservatives accusing the news site of political bias.

The original headline, "Larry Hogan is standing between Angela Alsobrooks and history," was met with criticism from conservatives, who argued that it unfairly framed Hogan as an obstacle to Alsobrooks' potential historic victory as the first Black senator from Maryland.

Some conservatives took to social media to mock and criticize the headline, accusing Politico of playing favorites.

"However much you hate the corporate media, it's not enough!," said former Trump advisor Steve Cortes.

Townhall.com web editor Rebecca Downs added, "Also way for them to shame Maryland voters who might be voting for Hogan!"

"This is how Politico is reporting the Maryland Senate race," noted Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York.

"Wonder which candidate Politico is rooting for," asked Calvary founding partner John Ashbrook.

Following the backlash, Politico updated the headline to read "Angela Alsobrooks won a messy Senate primary. Now she takes on Larry Hogan."

Politico's communications director Melissa Cooke told Fox News Digital that headlines are regularly tested and switched on a rotation based on engagement. She also explained that there is no editor's note in the new article since both headlines "accurately reflect the piece itself."

The article itself does not describe Hogan as standing in Alsobrooks' way, but it does emphasize Alsobrooks' potential to "make history" if she wins the upcoming election.

Republicans are hoping that Hogan, a former two-term governor with high favorability ratings, can help the party regain control of the Senate despite Maryland being an overwhelmingly blue state. Maryland has not had a Republican senator in almost four decades.

The controversy over the headline underscores the challenges facing media organizations in covering political races in a polarized environment. Critics have accused Politico of bias in its coverage of various issues, including the Trump administration and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Maryland Senate race is expected to be closely watched as a potential indicator of the political landscape ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
