Kenyan President William Ruto has refuted claims by local media outlets that he spent $1.2 million on private jet hire for his recent state visit to the United States. The President clarified that the actual rental cost amounted to $76,000.
President William Ruto of Kenya has refuted reports that he spent a lavish $1.2 million on a private jet for his state visit to the United States last week. The President clarified on Thursday that the actual rental cost of the aircraft was $76,000, significantly lower than the figure reported by Kenyan media outlets.
President Ruto's clarification comes amid public scrutiny over the perceived extravagance of his delegation, which comprised approximately 30 individuals, including musicians, actors, and a comedian. This scrutiny intensified following the President's call for prudent spending in government.
During his visit to the U.S., President Ruto held talks with his American counterpart, President Joe Biden, who praised him for his "bold leadership." The President's delegation also met with various U.S. officials, including Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
Despite the clarification on the jet rental cost, critics continue to question the size and composition of President Ruto's delegation, arguing that it was excessive and unwarranted. The President has defended his decision to include a diverse group in his entourage, stating that it was important to showcase Kenya's cultural diversity and promote the country's creative industries.
However, the controversy surrounding the jet rental cost underscores the growing public discontent with government spending. President Ruto has pledged to reduce spending and increase transparency in an effort to address concerns over fiscal responsibility.
In line with this commitment, the government has announced plans to increase taxes on basic goods in the next financial year and raise an additional $2.3 billion to finance the budget. This move has drawn criticism from some sectors of the population, who argue that it will disproportionately burden low-income earners.
President Ruto has defended the tax increases, stating that they are necessary to avoid "a country in debt distress." He has emphasized the importance of cutting government spending and ensuring fiscal discipline.
Despite the President's efforts to clarify the jet rental cost and justify his delegation's size, the controversy surrounding his state visit is likely to persist as the public continues to scrutinize government spending and demand greater accountability.
