Bipartisan efforts on presidential ethics reform legislation hit a roadblock as Democratic members reportedly withdrew support following discussions with the White House.

In a blow to bipartisan cooperation, Democratic members of the House Oversight Committee have allegedly pulled their support for a presidential ethics reform bill after consulting with the White House. The legislation, introduced by committee chairman Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) and Rep. Katie Porter (D-Calif.), aimed to address financial disclosures, family member travel, and other ethical concerns.

Porter claimed that three Democratic co-sponsors initially expressed support but later withdrew after conversations with the White House. Sources confirmed the reports, but the White House declined to comment.

At a March 2020 impeachment inquiry hearing, Porter had called for bipartisan collaboration on ethics reform, highlighting concerns about weak corruption prevention rules. Comer responded positively, expressing a willingness to work with her.

The Presidential Ethics Reform Act would mandate presidents and vice presidents to disclose payments or gifts from foreign sources both before and after their terms, as well as payments exceeding $10,000 to family members during that period. It also aims to tighten conflict-of-interest disclosure rules.

Comer hailed the bill as a step toward reducing "influence peddling" in Washington. However, the apparent partisan divide has raised doubts about its viability.

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-Ill.), reportedly one of the Democrats who withdrew support, declined comment. Reps. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Kweisi Mfume (D-Md.) did not respond to inquiries.

The bill currently has only Comer and Porter as co-sponsors. It has been referred to the Oversight Committee but faces uncertain prospects if bipartisan support cannot be secured.

Billionaire investor Mark Cuban voiced his support for the legislation. Congress.gov indicates that the bill has been introduced and referred to the Oversight Committee but has yet to be scheduled for further action.

Presidential ethics reform has been a contentious issue, with both Democrats and Republicans expressing concerns about potential conflicts of interest. The revelation of contacts between Democratic members and the White House has further complicated the matter.

Transparency and accountability in government are crucial for maintaining public trust. The collapse of bipartisan support for this ethics reform bill raises questions about the willingness of both parties to address ethical concerns in a nonpartisan manner.

It remains to be seen whether the Presidential Ethics Reform Act will find a path forward in the politically polarized climate of Congress. The withdrawal of support by Democratic members is a setback, but it may also serve as a catalyst for further dialogue and negotiation on this important issue.
