Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was assaulted on Friday evening in Kultorvet Square in Copenhagen. Following the attack, she reported feeling shocked.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was subjected to an assault by a male assailant on Friday evening in the heart of Copenhagen's Kultorvet Square. Fortunately, Frederiksen escaped unharmed, displaying no outward signs of injury, according to a local resident who spoke to Reuters.
The Prime Minister's office promptly issued a statement acknowledging the incident: "Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was physically assaulted on Friday evening at Kultorvet Square in Copenhagen by a man who was subsequently apprehended. Prime Minister Frederiksen is understandably shaken by the event."
Law enforcement officials confirmed the arrest of a male suspect through a social media platform, stating that an investigation into the incident was underway. However, they refrained from divulging any further specific details.
Soren Kjergaard, a barista working in the square, described Frederiksen's demeanor as "slightly stressed" following the incident.
Denmark's Minister of Environment, Magnus Heunicke, expressed shock upon learning of the attack. He stated on social media: "Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was today assaulted and beaten by a man on Kultorvet in Copenhagen. Mette is naturally shocked by the attack. I must say that it shakes all of us who are close to her."
Edgars Rinkevics, President of Latvia, conveyed his concern via social media: "Violence is completely unacceptable in a democratic society. My thoughts are with @Statsmin and her family."
This assault on Frederiksen occurred just two days before the European Union election in Denmark. Three weeks prior, a similar incident unfolded in Slovakia, where Prime Minister Robert Fico sustained serious injuries in an assassination attempt, as reported by Reuters.
The attack on Frederiksen has raised concerns regarding the safety of politicians in the current political environment. The use of violence as a means of expressing discontent or pursuing political objectives is widely condemned as unacceptable in democratic societies.
The incident has sparked calls for increased vigilance and protection for political figures, particularly during election periods when tensions can run high. It is crucial to ensure the safety and well-being of those who serve in public office, allowing them to carry out their duties without fear of violence or intimidation.
The investigation into the assault on Prime Minister Frederiksen is ongoing, and further details are expected to emerge in due course. The Danish public awaits the outcome of the investigation and the appropriate legal consequences for the perpetrator responsible for this attack.
