Known affectionately as "Mr. Raider," Otto was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980 and is widely considered one of the all-time greats at his position.
Born on March 22, 1938, in Wausau, Wisconsin, Otto played college football at the University of Miami, where he earned All-American honors in 1959. Drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the 1960 NFL Draft, he was traded to the Raiders just a few months later, where he would spend the rest of his illustrious career.
Otto made an immediate impact on the Raiders, starting every game at center for the next 15 seasons. He was a key cog in the team's success during that era, helping the Raiders win their first Super Bowl title in 1977.
In an era before facemasks and sophisticated protective equipment, Otto was known for his toughness and durability. He played in 210 consecutive games, a testament to his exceptional physical conditioning and unwavering determination.
In addition to his on-field accomplishments, Otto was also highly respected off the field. He was a vocal leader in the locker room and a mentor to countless young players. His contributions to the Oakland Raiders organization extended well beyond his playing days.
After retiring from football in 1975, Otto served as a color commentator for Raiders radio broadcasts for over two decades. He also worked as a consultant for the team and was inducted into the Raiders' Ring of Honor in 1991.
Jim Otto's legacy as one of the greatest centers in NFL history is secure. His exceptional athleticism, unwavering determination, and infectious enthusiasm left an unforgettable mark on the Raiders organization and the game of football as a whole.
The loss of Jim Otto is a significant blow to the football community. His contributions to the sport have left an enduring legacy, and he will be remembered as one of the most iconic and respected players in NFL history.
