Proposed Bill to Honor Former President Trump with Exclusive Economic Zone Renaming

A House Republican lawmaker has proposed legislation to rename the United States' coastal waterways after former President Donald Trump.
Former President Donald Trump is set to meet with Republican lawmakers in Washington, D.C., as the party focuses on regaining control of the Senate and "putting this country back on the path to greatness," according to Senator Steve Daines of Montana.
Meanwhile, a new legislative proposal has emerged, spearheading an effort to honor Trump by renaming the United States' coastal waterways after him. Representative Greg Steube, a Republican from Florida, introduced a bill on Friday that would rename the immediate waters surrounding the U.S., known as the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), as the "Donald John Trump Exclusive Economic Zone of the United States."
This move comes as Trump celebrates his 78th birthday, and it is seen as a testament to his enduring influence within the Republican Party. However, the bill's prospects in the Democrat-controlled Senate are unclear.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Steube hailed Trump's environmental stewardship, stating that he "cares about the strength and resilience of our oceans." The congressman pointed to Trump's actions during his presidency, including establishing marine sanctuaries and withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement.
The U.S. currently has the largest EEZ in the world, covering approximately 4,383,000 square miles. An EEZ refers to waterways immediately off a country's coast where it can claim sole rights for fishing, drilling, and other activities.
Steube's bill is not the first legislative attempt to honor Trump with a prominent landmark. Earlier this year, Representative Guy Reschenthaler, a Republican from Pennsylvania, introduced a bill to rename Washington-Dulles International Airport to the Donald J. Trump International Airport.
However, that proposal was met with criticism from Democrats, who countered with legislation to change the name of the federal prison in Miami to the Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution.
Despite the partisan divide over the renaming proposals, they underscore Trump's continued relevance within the Republican Party. As the GOP prepares for the upcoming midterm elections, it remains to be seen whether these symbolic gestures will resonate with voters.
In the meantime, Trump's upcoming meeting with Republican lawmakers will likely focus on formulating a strategy for retaking the Senate and advancing their legislative agenda. The meeting comes as the party faces political challenges, including an ongoing investigation into the January 6th Capitol attack and the upcoming trial of Trump ally Steve Bannon.
