As the Secret Service faces increased scrutiny over security breaches, experts highlight the vulnerabilities of golf courses, a favored location for former presidents to vacation.
In the wake of two failed assassination attempts on former President Donald Trump while he was golfing, concerns have been raised about the adequacy of Secret Service protection at these vulnerable locations. Former Secret Service agent Bill Gage emphasizes the need for increased security measures due to the "committed" nature of the suspects and the inherent challenges of securing golf courses.
The Secret Service is responsible for safeguarding over 40 individuals, including presidents, vice presidents, and their families. However, its mission is hindered by insufficient manpower, with a former agent estimating that hiring and training additional agents could take up to two years.

According to the Secret Service, golf courses pose unique security challenges compared to the White House. While Camp David, the presidential retreat, boasts extensive security measures, vacation homes and the surrounding areas often lack similar safeguards.
The tradition of presidents vacationing in different locations further complicates protection efforts, as each site requires its own tailored security plan. Gage recalls the elaborate measures implemented during President Obama's Hawaii vacation in 2012, including a large complement of Navy SEALS and Coast Guard personnel.

Gage emphasizes the need for increased manpower to address these challenges. He advocates for an overhaul of the agency, which has faced heightened threats since 9/11. In recent months, threats against high-level U.S. officials have included assassination attempts, death threats, and alleged plots orchestrated by foreign agents.
In the wake of the first assassination attempt on Trump, the Secret Service director resigned, and investigations are underway to assess preparedness and response protocols. Following Sunday's incident, a suspect was arrested for allegedly bringing a loaded rifle to Trump's golf club in Florida.

The Secret Service's challenges are compounded by the extensive properties owned by former presidents, such as Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. Gage highlights the difficulty of securing vacation homes, particularly those with nearby neighbors and frequent comings and goings.
He warns that the risks associated with protecting presidents at golf courses have increased significantly. The logistics of securing such locations pose an almost impossible task for the Secret Service.
