Queen Camilla Praises King Charles' Determination Amid Cancer Diagnosis

King Charles III, the newly crowned British monarch, is facing his cancer diagnosis head-on, according to his wife, Queen Camilla. In a recent interview, Camilla shared that the king is "doing fine, except he won't slow down and won't do what he's told," as reported by Sky News.

This revelation comes on the heels of Buckingham Palace's February announcement of King Charles's cancer diagnosis. Since then, the 75-year-old monarch has been undergoing outpatient treatment, which has not deterred him from carrying out his royal duties.

Several royal experts expressed their unsurprise at Camilla's statement, citing King Charles's eagerness to make an impact on his reign and his lifelong preparation for the role.

"Given he had the longest wait in history as heir to the throne, given his age, as well as his current health crisis, he is poignantly aware that time is ticking," said British royals expert Hilary Fordwich. "He has been preparing for this role his entire life, being in line for the throne for 70 years."

Fordwich elaborated, "After waiting for so long, he has thrown himself into the job. He wants to make his mark. So all that downtime away from his people makes him anxious and agitated."

King Charles's commitment to his work extends beyond his diagnosis, as he has always been a dedicated and hardworking member of the royal family.

"Every single one of the projects he has undertaken is designed to make a real mark," added Fordwich. "They are not just honorary where he shows up once in a while. He has devoted his life to having an impact. Hence, the downtime required by his doctors is not in the slightest welcome. His reaction is admirable."

Fordwich also highlighted the importance of a monarch's active presence, stating, "The last thing that the nation wants is a lazy monarch."

Following his diagnosis, King Charles remained away from his duties for a short time but resumed his responsibilities in late April. The palace noted that his schedule would be adjusted to prioritize his recovery.

Unlike previous monarchs, King Charles's decision to publicly disclose his health issues, including his prostate surgery and cancer diagnosis, has raised awareness of these conditions.

According to the National Health Service in England, there was an 11-fold increase in inquiries about prostate problems in the weeks after the king announced his prostate treatment.

As the annual celebration of the British monarch's birthday, Trooping the Colour, approaches, King Charles is expected to attend the event despite his diagnosis. He will participate in the parade in a horse-drawn carriage alongside Queen Camilla instead of horseback as in previous years.

Royal expert Ian Pelham Turner believes that the king's determination to continue his duties is a reflection of his lifelong preparation for the role.

"I’m sure his doctors would rather have the king slow down, but there are a few pivotal moments – the D-Day anniversary and Trooping the Colour among them – when he really has to show the flag, as it were," Andersen added. "The message he wants to send is that the monarchy is strong and moving forward, regardless of the medical crises that have befallen the House of Windsor."

Kinsey Schofield, host of the To Di For Daily podcast, noted the king's "incredible work ethic" and his decades of supporting his chosen causes.

"As Prince Charles, he created opportunities for himself to contribute to matters of personal importance, giving him a head start," said Schofield. "Those passions were environmental and urban mentorship. He was also curious about architecture and how it shapes cities and countries. He was often considered such a busybody about these topics that he would find himself reprimanded for pushing the limits of appropriate influence."

Schofield believes that King Charles's determination stems from his desire to make a positive impact and leave a lasting legacy.

"The king waited 70 years for this position with the weight of the world on his shoulders to be as respected and admired as the late Queen Elizabeth II," Schofield said. "Those are some frightening expectations. I think King Charles is just eager to push forward and focus on the positive."
