Rams Adjust Stafford's Contract to Ensure Success in Upcoming Season

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay disclosed that quarterback Matthew Stafford's contract has been adjusted to enhance his happiness and strengthen the team's chances of making another postseason appearance.

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay's tardiness to his scheduled media availability at the start of training camp at Loyola Marymount University was justified by his behind-the-scenes efforts to appease quarterback Matthew Stafford. The adjustment to Stafford's contract aims to boost the team's performance and maintain its competitiveness.

Stafford, who joined the Rams in 2021, has three years remaining on his four-year, $160 million contract, with no guaranteed money beyond this season. His $40 million average annual salary ranks 14th in the league. However, Stafford's desire for a sweeter deal became evident after his predecessor in L.A., Detroit QB Jared Goff, signed a four-year, $212 million contract, making him the league's third-highest paid quarterback at $53 million annually.

Reports indicate that Stafford sought additional guaranteed money in his contract. While McVay declined to delve into specifics, he emphasized the Rams' urgency to address Stafford's request, especially with backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo facing a two-game suspension for violating the NFL's drug policy. Second-year pro Stetson Bennett spent last season on the non-football injury list, addressing mental health concerns.

"We were able to have an understanding of what was important," McVay said. "We were able to articulate both perspectives, and I think the most important thing was coming to a solution and finding common ground."

Stafford's impressive play in the second half of 2023, leading the Rams to a 7-1 record down the stretch, underscored his value to the team. Despite missing two games with a sprained ligament in his right thumb, Stafford threw for 3,965 yards and ranked third-lowest in the league in pressure percentage (26.8%) from Week 11 to the end of the regular season.

"We were able to do that, and that was the goal," McVay said. "I do want to be careful in getting into too many of the particulars. What I am grateful for is that we were able to solve whatever that issue was. And now here we are, and I'm excited to be able to talk about football."

With Stafford's contract concerns resolved, the Rams can focus on preparing for the upcoming season, aiming for another postseason berth and potentially a deep playoff run. Stafford's strong play and the team's improved protection will be crucial factors in their success.
