Ray Romano candidly reflects on the journey of his hit sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond," revealing the pivotal role played by costar Peter Boyle in its unprecedented success.
Ray Romano, the beloved star of the iconic sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond," recently opened up to The Associated Press about his unexpected journey during the show's nine-season run. Despite his immense popularity, Romano admits to being plagued by persistent doubt throughout its entirety.
"I was filled with doubt all the time," Romano confessed. "I don't know if I'm acting well, and I know I'm not in the first season. I can look back and see I'm stiff. We're trying to kind of nail down the tone."
Despite his initial apprehensions, the show's enduring success has made it an American classic. However, Romano's viewing experience differs from that of his countless fans.
"If I'm being brutally honest, I was filled with doubt all the time. I don't know if I'm acting well, and I know I'm not in the first season," he explained. "I can look back and see I'm stiff. We're trying to kind of nail down the tone. And so it's a little bumpy in the beginning."
The show's success, according to Romano, was largely due to the serendipitous casting of Peter Boyle as his cantankerous father, Frank Barone. Romano credits Boyle with instilling a sense of comfort and acceptance that allowed him to fully embrace his character.
"He wasn't supposed to read. We were just supposed to have a meeting with him," Romano recalled. "But he offered to read. And in his defense, it was a rough day for him. We really couldn't gauge whether he was getting the comedy of it, and we still said, 'It's Peter Boyle, let's just go with the best actor in the room.'"
The gamble paid off spectacularly, as Boyle's portrayal of Frank became a cornerstone of the show's humor. Romano was equally captivated by Boyle's off-screen life, which was a world away from his on-screen persona.
"He was a monk sworn to silence for two years," Romano revealed. "He lived in a monastery during his pre-Hollywood days. His wife was a reporter for Rolling Stone. And she interviewed him, and that's how they met. She was friends with Yoko Ono. They all started hanging out. And when they got married, John Lennon was the best man at Peter's wedding. So, he's just a fascinating guy and totally different from the character that he played on my show."
The chemistry between Romano and Boyle was undeniable, resulting in performances that resonated with audiences. Alongside their talented castmates, including Brad Garrett, Patricia Heaton, and Doris Roberts, they collectively earned numerous Emmy Award nominations.
"Listen, when you're creating a sitcom, you've got to get lucky. And we got lucky that we found Peter, we found Doris Roberts and even Brad Garrett," Romano said. "You know, we didn't write that role. Brad brought this persona that was nowhere in our minds when we were creating the show. So, we got lucky there. All those things had to fall in place for it to be successful."
Garrett's portrayal of Robert, Romano's competitive brother, and Roberts' embodiment of their overbearing mother created a relatable and hilarious family dynamic. The show's enduring legacy is a testament to the collective talent of its cast and crew.
While the rerun of "Everybody Loves Raymond" continues to bring laughter to countless viewers, Romano's own experience is tinged with a sense of critical reflection. "I can't enjoy it the same way my fans do," he said. "I know I can do it better."
Despite his self-criticism, Romano acknowledges the immense impact the show has had on his life. "I'm lucky. I'm very lucky," he said. "I got to work with great people and I got to learn a lot about myself."
Ray Romano's journey with "Everybody Loves Raymond" is a tale of triumph and humility, a testament to the power of collaboration and the enduring brilliance of a timeless comedy.
