Despite the film's portrayal of a divisive figure, actor Dennis Quaid maintains that the film is not inherently political but rather a celebration of American identity and values.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, actor Dennis Quaid, who portrayed the 40th U.S. president in the new film 'Reagan,' shed light on the film's significance beyond its political implications.

'Reagan,' a biographical drama detailing the life of President Ronald Reagan, made a strong opening weekend debut, exceeding box office expectations with an estimated $10 million. Audiences have overwhelmingly responded positively, awarding the film a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics have been more polarized in their assessments.

Despite the disparate reviews, Quaid emphasized the film's genuine purpose as a portrayal of a pivotal figure in American history, transcending partisan politics.

"It's a biopic. It's a love story. It's about all of us as America, where we used to be," he explained. "A lot of that gets twisted because people have agendas."

Quaid addressed the concerns that portraying Reagan, a Republican president, might invite criticism or attempts at "canceling" him. However, he remained steadfast in his belief in the film's apolitical message.

"When Reagan was president as well, you know, they called him a warmonger. But this is the guy who ended the Cold War, by the way, and made peace with the Soviets. But it took a cold warrior like that. … And they called him a third-rate actor, this and that," Quaid said.

"Reagan was like everybody's dad at the time that he was president," he continued. "And, like all families, that's either you admire your dad or you’re rebelling against your dad. And there's a lot of those feelings still hold on. That's what we were going through with politics or whatever in this country today, a lot of people wanting to kind of relate that to Reagan and make this a political movie, which it’s not."

The film's director, Sean McNamara, and producer, Mark Joseph, have collaborated on several other biographical projects, including 'Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas' and 'The Miracle Season.' The cast also includes Penelope Ann Miller and Jon Voight.

Despite the film's positive reception by audiences, it has faced criticism from some left-leaning outlets. 'The Daily Beast' labeled it "the worst movie of the year," while 'The Washington Post' and 'Variety' also published negative reviews.

Undeterred by the critical backlash, Quaid remains proud of the film's portrayal of Reagan as a symbol of American values and a reminder of a time when the country was more united.
