The bodies of two Kansas mothers, who vanished while driving to Oklahoma, have been found inside a chest freezer in a cow pasture, according to court documents. The grim discovery comes months after investigators suspended their search for the women, whose case has been shrouded in mystery and suspicion.
The bodies of Veronica Butler, 39, and Jilian Kelley, 27, were unearthed during a two-day excavation of a burial site in a cow pasture, according to search warrants filed in court on May 15. The documents reveal that the women were found inside a chest freezer, but provide no further details on the manner of their deaths.
The pair were last seen on March 30 heading to pick up their children before their car was found abandoned near the Oklahoma-Kansas border. Foul play was suspected from the outset, and the search for the women was suspended in April.
Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the women's disappearance and deaths: Tad Bert Cullum, 43; Tifany Machel Adams, 54; Cole Earl Twombly, 50; Cora Twombly, 44; and Paul Grice, 31.
Court documents allege that Grice inquired about the longevity of DNA on clothing in the dirt and a hole 15 feet deep. He also allegedly sought information about getting a man and his family to Mexico.
Data recovered from the suspects' phones reportedly links them to the murders. The four initial suspects belong to a religiously affiliated anti-government group called "God's Misfits," but it is unclear whether Grice is involved in the organization.
Adams, one of the arrested women, is reportedly the grandmother of Butler's children. Court records indicate that she was involved in a custody dispute with Butler, whose children's father is currently in a rehabilitation facility.
The discovery of the women's remains has sent shockwaves through their community in Hugoton, Kansas. Tim Singer, pastor of the Hugoton Assembly of God, described the victims as "wonderful mothers" who were deeply involved in their children's lives.
"This is just a terrible, terrible tragedy," Singer said. "We're just trying to wrap our heads around it."
Investigators continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the women's deaths. The motive for the crime remains unclear, and it is unknown whether the victims were targeted due to their involvement with the anti-government group.
The case has raised concerns about the rise of extremism and anti-government sentiment in the United States. Law enforcement agencies are urging the public to report any suspicious activity or individuals who may pose a threat to public safety.
The disappearance and tragic deaths of Veronica Butler and Jilian Kelley have left a deep scar on their loved ones and the community they called home. As the investigation unfolds, authorities are determined to bring justice for the victims and closure for their grieving families.
