Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) has slammed the Secret Service and other authorities for failing to secure the area around former President Donald Trump before a second apparent assassination attempt against him on Sunday.
Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) has joined the chorus of voices criticizing the Secret Service and local authorities for security lapses that allowed a suspect to get dangerously close to former President Donald Trump before opening fire at him on Sunday.
"There is no way in hell that somebody should have been that close to President Trump," Burchett asserted on Fox News Live. "This line of sight that we talk about is just beyond me."

Burchett questioned how the suspect, later identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, was able to approach within 300 to 500 yards of Trump's location at Trump International Golf Club. He pointed out that other lawmakers are already demanding enhanced security measures for the former president.
"They are already calling now. And you got to ask yourself, why was there not a drone flying over wherever the president is? This is ridiculous," Burchett said.

While expressing appreciation for the Secret Service agents who quickly spotted and fired at the suspect, Burchett criticized the agency's leadership, calling it "compromised" and "lacking in leadership."
"We've got to get some answers. I don't think we're going to get them during this administration, but hopefully, under the Trump administration, we’ll clean this rat's nest out," Burchett declared.

Burchett also dismissed claims by Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw that security surrounding Trump is at a lower level because he is no longer the sitting president. He argued that authorities should have been aware of Trump's golf outing and taken appropriate precautions.
"Dadgummit, they should have closed it off. They have the power to do that. They ought to do that. They're going to come to us for more money. I think they need to quit with the DEI hires and start putting qualified people out there in decision-making positions instead of what they’re doing right now," Burchett stated.

Burchett is a member of the House task force investigating the first attempted assassination of Donald Trump in July. His criticism of the Secret Service underscores the ongoing concerns about security measures for former presidents and the need for thorough investigations into security failures.
