RetroArch Update Adds a Host of New Cores and Fixes for Emulation on iOS

With the change in rules for emulators on iOS, it's no surprise that one of the most well-known of them, RetroArch, has proven so popular. And with the latest update, emulation fans can benefit from a host of new fixes and cores being added to the app, making it even easier to enjoy emulation of your favourite titles from the past.

You can check the full patch notes on the iOS App Store.

But first off, what exactly is a 'core'? Well, we had to look this up ourselves, but essentially a core seems to be the stand-alone emulator being added to the broader RetroArch emulator system which it relies on.

What does this mean? Well, more games, more emulation and more stable functionality as far as we can tell. But it's also emblematic of the rapidly evolving nature of emulation and a pretty gladdening sight for those who were worried RetroArch might lack further support.

We've commented many times on the nature of emulation on iOS and the legally sticky situation Apple might be putting developers in, so we won't go over it again here. However, in more positive terms the further additions to RetroArch are indicative of the rapid nature of open-source development, and actually a lot faster than we've seen many games get updated on their own.

Speaking of other games? Want to see what else think is worth a shot that isn't on an emulator? Well, there are plenty of great games you can play right now on mobile, and our list of the best mobile games of 2024 (so far). And if you want a specific pick, you can check out one of our latest reviews with our coverage of one of Netflix Games' newest titles, the hack 'n slash cyberpunk side-scroller Katana Zero!

Emulation is a fantastic way to revisit classic games that you may have missed out on the first time around, or to simply relive some of your favorite memories. And with the latest update to RetroArch, it's now easier than ever to do so on your iOS device.

So if you're looking for a way to play some of your favorite retro games on the go, be sure to check out RetroArch. It's one of the most powerful and versatile emulators available, and it's only getting better with each update.

In addition to the new cores and fixes, the latest update to RetroArch also includes a number of other new features and improvements, including:

* Support for the new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro

* A new on-screen keyboard for easier text input

* Improved support for Bluetooth controllers

* Various bug fixes and performance improvements

Overall, the latest update to RetroArch is a major improvement for the app, and it makes it even easier to enjoy emulation on your iOS device. If you're a fan of retro gaming, then you should definitely check it out.
