Robert F. Kennedy Jr. warns that the conviction of former President Trump on felony charges will hurt the Democratic Party in the upcoming 2024 presidential election, as voters see it as a weaponization of the justice system.
Former President Trump's conviction on all 34 felony counts has sparked strong reactions from both sides of the political aisle, with 2024 presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. issuing a stern warning against the verdict's potential impact on the Democratic Party.
Kennedy, appearing on "Jesse Watters Primetime," argued that the conviction will "backfire" on the Democrats, as many voters will perceive it as a politically motivated prosecution. "I think there's a large number of Americans who are going to see this as the politicization... the weaponization of the enforcement agencies," Kennedy said.
He believes that the Democrats' strategy of pursuing legal charges against Trump is a reflection of their inability to defeat him in a fair election. "The DNC feels like it's like it has a candidate that cannot win fair and square in the polls, and so they have to win in the courts," he stated.
Kennedy emphasized the importance of maintaining neutrality in the justice system, warning against its politicization. He cited his father, Robert F. Kennedy Sr., who as Attorney General in 1961, prioritized avoiding political prosecutions. "He said, ‘Rule number one, whenever politics is out the window. We never prosecute based upon politics. We never ask whether somebody is Democrat or Republican,’" Kennedy explained.
He expressed concern that the conviction could damage the integrity of the nation's justice system, potentially transforming it into a tool for suppressing political opponents. "If somebody's going to run against you, you get rid of him one way or another," Kennedy stated.
Kennedy also criticized the role of the media in the current political climate, accusing them of tribalism and a lack of integrity. "I think there's tribalism in the media and a lot of them have forgotten what journalism is," he said.
The fallout from Trump's conviction has drawn wide attention, with some critics alleging that it represents an unprecedented attack on American democracy. Trump has vowed to "fight to the end," calling the verdict "long from over."
Amidst the ongoing debate, the true impact of the conviction on the upcoming presidential election remains uncertain. However, Kennedy's warning highlights the potential for significant consequences, as voters grapple with the implications of a former president facing potential jail time.
