Senator Mitt Romney believes President Biden made a tactical mistake by not pardoning former President Trump or pressuring New York prosecutors to drop their hush money case against him. Romney argues that such a move would have unified the country behind Biden and prevented the ongoing NY v. Trump trial, which he calls a "sham" promoted by Democrats.
Senator Mitt Romney, R-Utah, has criticized President Biden's handling of former President Trump's legal troubles, arguing that Biden should have pardoned Trump or pressured New York prosecutors to drop their hush money case against him. Romney believes that such a move would have unified the country behind Biden and prevented the ongoing NY v. Trump trial, which he calls a "sham" promoted by Democrats.
Romney's comments come as Trump maintains a lead in the polls over Biden in many battleground states. Romney believes that Biden's failure to pardon Trump or pressure New York prosecutors to drop their case has played a role in Trump's continued popularity.
"I think it's a terrible fault for our country to see people attacking our legal system — that's an enormous mistake," Romney said when asked about the political display outside the courthouse where Trump's trial is taking place. "I think it's also demeaning for people to quite apparently try and run for vice president by donning a red tie and standing outside the courthouse. It's just — I'd have felt awkward."
Romney's comments have been met with mixed reactions from Republicans. Some Republicans have praised Romney for speaking out against Trump, while others have criticized him for attacking the former president.
Trump himself has not commented on Romney's remarks, but he has repeatedly attacked the NY v. Trump trial as a "witch hunt" and a "hoax."
The trial is expected to continue for several weeks, and it is unclear what the outcome will be. However, Romney's comments have added to the growing debate over Biden's handling of Trump's legal troubles.
In addition to Romney, other Republicans have also criticized Biden's handling of Trump's legal troubles. Senator Josh Hawley, R-Mo., has said that the NY v. Trump trial is a "total joke." And Senator Rick Scott, R-Fla., has said that Biden should "stop attacking Donald Trump."
It remains to be seen whether Biden will change his approach to Trump's legal troubles. However, Romney's comments have made it clear that there is growing dissatisfaction among Republicans with Biden's handling of the issue.
