Bo Nix impressed in his NFL debut, leading the Denver Broncos to a 34-30 preseason victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Nix's performance may have given him the edge in the battle for Denver's starting quarterback job.

Rookie quarterback Bo Nix made a strong case for himself as the Broncos' starting quarterback in Denver's preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts. Nix, the No. 12 overall draft pick in April, completed 15 of 21 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown, while also rushing three times for 17 yards.

Nix played the majority of the game against Indianapolis' backup defense and was the most efficient of Denver's three quarterbacks. He led the Broncos on two long scoring drives, including a 1-yard touchdown pass to Marvin Mims Jr. late in the second quarter.

Veteran Jarrett Stidham started the game for Denver but was replaced by Nix after going 4 of 7 with 57 yards and one interception. Former New York Jets starter Zach Wilson also saw action in the second half, completing 3 of 4 passes for 35 yards.

Nix's performance was particularly impressive considering he was playing in his first NFL game. He showed poise and accuracy, as well as the ability to make plays with his legs.

"Bo Nix is just a great athlete, and I was so close to getting that dude," Colts rookie Laiatu Latu said. "But I didn't get him."

The Broncos' defense also played well, holding the Colts to just 30 points and forcing two turnovers. Linebacker Josey Jewell had an interception, while cornerback Michael Ojemudia had a fumble recovery.

For the Colts, second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson and 2021 NFL rushing champion Jonathan Taylor each played just two series. Richardson finished 2 of 4 with 25 yards and one run for 1 yard, while Taylor had two carries for 4 yards.

Longtime veteran Joe Flacco led the Colts to a field goal on his only series, going 3 of 5 for 28 yards.

The Colts' defense was led by cornerback Micah Abraham, who forced a fumble and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. Abraham also had an interception.

Broncos rookie Audric Estime rushed for 31 yards and a touchdown, while Blake Watson added 69 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

The Broncos will host the Green Bay Packers next Sunday in their second preseason game, while the Colts will welcome the Arizona Cardinals to town on Saturday following two joint practices this week.

Broncos: Tight end Lucas Krull (toe), cornerback Art Green (concussion)
