New England Patriots rookie wide receiver Javon Baker has made bold claims about his abilities, stating that he believes he is already one of the best wide receivers in the league. Baker's confidence stems from his impressive college career and his belief in his own potential.
Javon Baker, a fourth-round pick by the New England Patriots in the 2024 NFL Draft, has made headlines with his unwavering confidence and ambitious statements. Baker believes that he is not just going to make an immediate impact in the NFL, but that he is already among the best wide receivers in the league. In a recent Instagram video, Baker exclaimed, "Out of your f---ing mind [if you think that]," when asked if he thought there were 10 receivers better than him.
During an introductory press conference with New England reporters, Baker continued to display his confidence, saying, "Come to the home stadium and bring your popcorn... I make people in wheelchairs stand up." Such bold statements are indicative of Baker's belief in his own abilities and his desire to make a mark in the NFL.
While confidence is crucial for any player, Baker knows that he will have to prove his worth in his rookie campaign. He will likely be catching passes from the Patriots' No. 3 overall pick, Drake Maye, who is expected to be the team's next starting quarterback. Maye's presence will give Baker a chance to showcase his skills on a big stage.
Before Baker can prove himself as one of the best young receivers in the league, he must first compete for a starting spot in training camp. Baker, who played at Central Florida, will face competition from fellow rookie receiver Ja'Lynn Polk, who starred for Washington during its national championship game run last season. Veteran Kendrick Bourne, 2023 standout DeMario "Pop" Douglas, and JuJu Smith-Schuster are also in the mix.
Despite the intense competition, Baker's confidence remains unshaken. He caught 52 passes for 1,139 yards and seven touchdowns last year and was named first-team All-Big 12 for leading the conference in receiving yards. His average of 21.9 yards per catch was second in the FBS. Baker's ability to make big plays and his belief in himself will serve him well as he competes for playing time.
Baker's swagger and belief in his own abilities are infectious, and if he can back up his words with on-field performance, he could become a star in New England. The pressure will be on him to deliver, but Baker appears to be embracing the challenge. His bold statements have created expectations, but only time will tell if he can live up to the hype.
