Moscow's offensive in northeastern Ukraine intensifies as the Russian military targets areas surrounding Kharkiv, while Kyiv responds with a series of drone attacks on Crimea and southern Russia, causing power outages and damage to energy facilities.

Russian forces have launched a renewed offensive in the northeastern Kharkiv region, intensifying attacks on towns and villages surrounding the city. Vovchansk, located just miles from the Russian border, has emerged as a focal point in the fighting, with Ukrainian authorities evacuating over 8,000 civilians. Russia's strategy typically involves reducing settlements to rubble using aerial strikes before deploying ground units.

In retaliation to Moscow's offensive, Ukraine launched a series of drone attacks on Crimea and southern Russia. The raids, which Kyiv has not officially acknowledged, targeted power plants, oil refineries, and other energy facilities, causing power outages and setting ablaze a refinery in Tuapse. The attacks aimed to disrupt Russian supply lines and infrastructure.

Russian forces have also tested Ukrainian defenses at other points along the extensive front line that stretches from north to south through eastern Ukraine. Recent attacks have occurred in the eastern Donetsk region, as well as the Chernihiv and Sumy regions in the north and the southern Zaporizhzhia region. The primary objective appears to be overwhelming Ukrainian resources and identifying weak points.

In Crimea, the drone attack on Sevastopol, the main base for Russia's Black Sea Fleet, damaged a power plant, leading to widespread power outages. Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev stated that it could take a day to fully restore electricity and warned of potential power cuts in certain areas.

In the Krasnodar region, a drone strike caused a fire at an oil refinery in Tuapse. Authorities reported that the blaze was eventually contained, and there were no casualties. Ukraine has repeatedly targeted refineries and energy facilities deep within Russia, causing significant damage.

Ukrainian drones also targeted Novorossiysk, a major Black Sea port, in the Krasnodar region. Fragments of downed drones triggered several fires, but no casualties were reported.

In the Belgorod region, a Ukrainian drone strike hit a vehicle, killing a woman and her 4-year-old child. Another attack ignited a fuel tank at a gas station in the same region.

The renewed fighting in eastern Ukraine has marked a continuation of the protracted war of attrition, with both sides seeking to maximize gains while minimizing losses. The conflict has dragged on for over 18 months, with the front line remaining relatively unchanged over that period.
