Convicted killer Scott Peterson's latest appeal seeks a new trial based on alleged untested DNA evidence that could implicate someone else in the murders of his wife, Laci, and their unborn son, Conner. However, prosecutors dismiss the claim, citing overwhelming evidence that led to Peterson's original conviction.
Scott Peterson, notorious for the 2002 murder of his pregnant wife, Laci, and their unborn son, Conner, is seeking a new trial through the Los Angeles Innocence Project. The project alleges that previously untested DNA evidence could exonerate Peterson.
However, prosecutors vehemently oppose this motion, arguing that the case against Peterson remains "overwhelming." They point to a litany of evidence, including Peterson's repeated lies to detectives, his mistress, and the media, as well as physical evidence linking him to the crime.
Specifically, prosecutors cite Peterson's false claim that his wife had died before she actually did, his denial of an extramarital affair, and his misleading statements about his whereabouts on the day Laci disappeared. They also highlight the discovery of Laci's hair on a pair of pliers from Peterson's boat and the presence of concrete anchors, suggesting he may have weighted her body down before disposing of it in San Francisco Bay.
Furthermore, prosecutors emphasize Peterson's purchase of a Mercedes in cash under a false name, his flight to Mexico with a large sum of money and bleached hair, and his bizarre behavior upon returning home to find his dog leashed in the backyard.
In their 337-page court filing, prosecutors meticulously detail the inconsistencies in Peterson's story and the physical evidence that implicates him. They contend that the DNA evidence sought by the Innocence Project is irrelevant since it is not connected to Laci or Conner's bodies.
The defense, however, argues that the untested DNA could exonerate Peterson by implicating other suspects. They point to a burglary at a neighboring house and a burned-out van parked nearby as potential sources of the DNA.
Despite Peterson's claims of innocence, the prosecution remains steadfast in their belief that he is guilty. They maintain that the evidence against him is overwhelming and that he should remain behind bars.
Peterson's hearing on the DNA dispute is scheduled for May 29. The outcome of this hearing will determine whether or not new DNA testing will be conducted and whether Peterson's conviction will be overturned.
