Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Masters champion, put together an impressive second round at the PGA Championship, shooting a five-under 66 just hours after being arrested for second-degree assault of a police officer.
Scheffler was detained at 6:01 a.m. ET and released just over two-and-a-half hours later. He arrived at Valhalla Golf Club 56 minutes before his tee time, with his warm-up severely affected.
"I did spend some time stretching in a jail cell - that was a first for me," Scheffler joked after the round.
Despite the distractions, Scheffler managed to birdie four of his last eight holes to finish the round two shots back of the lead.
"It was a challenge coming out to play," Scheffler said. "I did my best to control my breathing and my heart rate."
Scheffler admitted that he was "pretty rattled" from his arrest, but he was able to focus on his game and produce a solid round.
"It took a few holes to feel normal," Scheffler said. "I usually stick to my routine. I’m a big routine guy.… It took a few holes to settle in."
Scheffler started the day with a birdie on the 10th hole, but he bogeyed the 11th. He responded with a birdie on the 12th and then five-straight pars.
Scheffler then ripped off four birdies in his next eight holes, including a birdie on the 18th hole to finish the round.
"I was pretty rattled to say the least … I was shaking the whole time," Scheffler said. "I was shaking for, like, an hour."
Despite the distractions, Scheffler was able to produce a solid round and remain in contention for the PGA Championship.
"Everyone was there in a moment where I really needed them," Scheffler said of his family and friends. "I didn’t stop shaking for a while."
Scheffler was booked into the Louisville Department of Corrections later Friday. He was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer (a felony), criminal mischief, reckless driving and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic.
Scheffler is scheduled to tee off in the third round of the PGA Championship at 1:10 p.m. ET on Saturday.
