Scottie Scheffler, the world's top-ranked golfer, has broken his silence on his controversial arrest back in May, an incident that has cast a long shadow over his season.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the Memorial Tournament, Scheffler described the arrest as "traumatic" and expressed relief that the charges against him had been dropped. However, he acknowledged that the memory of the event will linger.

"It's not something I love reliving," Scheffler said. "That mug shot will always be out there."

The incident occurred outside the Valhalla Golf Club, where Scheffler was playing in the PGA Championship. He was arrested and charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct, but those charges were later dropped.

Scheffler's attorney, Steve Romines, has stated that Scheffler did not want to pursue litigation against the Louisville Metro Police, even though he had a strong case.

"I didn't want to have to pursue legal action against Louisville because the people of Louisville would have had to pay for the mistakes of their police department," Scheffler explained.

Despite the traumatic nature of the incident, Scheffler has continued to perform well on the golf course. He tied for second at the Charles Schwab Challenge the week after his arrest.

Scheffler is now looking ahead to the U.S. Open, which begins next week. He admits that he is still trying to process what happened, but he hopes that with time, it will become a distant memory.

"I think that's part of the recovery process," Scheffler said. "Your brain tries to figure out how this happened, and I will probably never figure out why or how. But it's just one of those deals that will always be kind of ingrained in my season this year."

Scheffler's fellow golfers have rallied around him in the wake of the arrest. Xander Schauffele, who won the PGA Championship, admitted that his group chat with Scheffler and others made light of the situation, using the mugshot as their profile picture.

Fans have also shown their support, creating T-shirts with Scheffler's mugshot that were worn at Valhalla.

While the incident may never be fully erased from Scheffler's memory, he is determined to move forward and focus on his golf. He believes that with time, people will forget about the arrest and remember him for his accomplishments on the course.

"I think people will forget," Scheffler said. "With time, it will go away."
