Despite police confirmation that no bodycam footage exists of Scottie Scheffler's arrest, ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington claims to possess video of the incident.
Louisville, Kentucky Mayor Craig Greenberg has confirmed that no bodycam footage exists of Scottie Scheffler's arrest during the PGA Championship. However, ESPN reporter Jeff Darlington claims to have captured footage of the incident, potentially contradicting the mayor's statement.
Scheffler, the reigning Masters champion, was arrested on Friday morning and charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic. According to the arrest report, Louisville Detective Bryan Gillis sustained injuries during the incident.
Mayor Greenberg emphasized that the officer involved did not have bodycam footage turned on at the time of the incident. He did acknowledge the presence of a "fixed camera" across the street from the scene and expressed uncertainty about whether Gillis was wearing a body camera.
Meanwhile, ESPN's Jeff Darlington released a statement claiming to have filmed the incident. The video reportedly shows Louisville police placing Scheffler in the back of a patrol car. This footage has raised questions about the absence of bodycam recordings from the arresting officers.
Scheffler has expressed regret for the incident, claiming it was a "big misunderstanding." He stated that he was following police instructions but found the situation chaotic due to a tragic accident that had occurred earlier.
The Louisville Courier-Journal reported that the alleged victim, Detective Gillis, suffered injuries that included a laceration to the head. However, the extent of his injuries and whether they were sustained during an altercation with Scheffler remain unclear.
It is important to note that the charges against Scheffler are still pending, and the exact circumstances surrounding his arrest are subject to ongoing investigations. Mayor Greenberg has declined to comment on whether Scheffler's charges will be reduced.
The absence of police bodycam footage has raised concerns about transparency and accountability in the investigation. While ESPN's footage may provide some insight, it is crucial to gather all available evidence to determine the complete picture of events leading to Scheffler's arrest.
The PGA Championship and the Louisville Police Department have not yet released any additional information regarding the incident or the investigation.
