World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler's disbelief and bewilderment during his arrest cast doubt on the circumstances leading up to his booking for assault, criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disobeying police orders.
In a shocking turn of events, World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler was arrested on Friday morning in Louisville, Kentucky, ahead of his second-round start at the PGA Championship. According to an inmate who witnessed the incident, Scheffler repeatedly expressed disbelief and claimed the arrest was unjust.
"He kept saying it was bulls--t that he was there," the inmate told TMZ Sports.
Scheffler's arrest stemmed from an alleged incident involving a police officer who was directing traffic. Scheffler reportedly drove past the officer and failed to stop when directed. The officer attached himself to Scheffler's vehicle and was allegedly dragged, resulting in injuries.
Scheffler was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer (a felony), criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding signals from an officer directing traffic. His arraignment is set for Tuesday, but sources close to the situation have indicated that the charges may be dropped.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg confirmed that no bodycam footage of the incident was available, as the officer involved did not have it turned on. However, Greenberg stated that there was a fixed camera across the street from the scene and that footage from it may be released.
In a statement released shortly after his arrest, Scheffler expressed his confusion and claimed it was a misunderstanding.
"This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers. It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that had occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do," he said. "I never intended to disregard any of the instructions."
The incident has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Scheffler's arrest. Some witnesses have questioned why the officer was directing traffic without the use of bodycam footage, while others have wondered why Scheffler was charged with a felony for allegedly dragging an officer who had attached himself to his vehicle.
The PGA Championship is one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf, and Scheffler's arrest has cast a shadow over the event. Scheffler was able to make it back to the course ahead of his scheduled tee time, but his focus may have been compromised by the incident.
The outcome of Scheffler's case remains uncertain, but the incident has already had a significant impact on his reputation and the narrative surrounding the tournament. Golf fans and legal experts will be closely monitoring the developments in the coming days and weeks.
