Senator Richard Blumenthal predicts that the public will be "shocked" and "appalled" when an interim report on the assassination attempt on former President Trump is released, revealing the security failures of the Secret Service. Lawmakers plan to release the report soon but emphasize that it is only an interim update, as they continue to investigate the incident.

Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) has expressed alarm over the Secret Service's failures in protecting former President Trump during an assassination attempt, stating that the public will be "shocked" by the revelations contained in an upcoming interim report.

Lawmakers received an update on the investigation into the July 13 shooting of Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, during a closed-door meeting with Acting U.S. Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe on Thursday.

Blumenthal warned that the interim report will detail the "failures" of the Secret Service, both in terms of security and communication lapses. He also criticized the Department of Homeland Security for its lack of transparency in providing information.

"But I think they also ought to be appalled and astonished by the failure of the Department of Homeland Security to be more forthcoming, to be as candid and frank, as it should be to them in terms of providing information," Blumenthal said.

Other lawmakers have refrained from commenting on the potential public reaction to the report, emphasizing that it is still in its interim stages. Senator Gary Peters (D-Mich.) acknowledged that additional information is needed before a complete report can be assembled.

"It will be coming out shortly. And it'll only be an interim report because there's a lot more information that we need to find," Peters said. "And we hope once this report comes out and we can get the additional information necessary to have a complete report of what happened, as well as steps of what we need to do in the future to make sure that this never happens."

Senator Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) emphasized the bipartisan nature of the investigation and the lawmakers' commitment to accuracy and transparency. He noted that Rowe had committed to providing additional information.

"So he's making the commitment to, you know, provide more information," Johnson said. "But we're hoping to get this preliminary report out before this work period. So again, we're on a pretty tight time constraints. But again, it's important people realize we are dedicated to a bipartisan product."

The Secret Service has faced intense scrutiny over its handling of the security arrangements for Trump's rally, particularly in light of allegations that intelligence indicated a potential threat. Assistant Director Michael Plati, who led the section responsible for planning Trump's protection, is ending his tenure at the agency on Friday.

Sources close to the investigation have revealed that Plati was encouraged to retire early, although the Secret Service has denied that he was asked to do so. The reason for Plati's decision to retire remains unclear.

The interim report is expected to shed light on the specific failures of the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security, raising concerns about the vulnerability of high-profile political figures and the effectiveness of security measures. The public will eagerly await the findings of the investigation as they seek answers and reassurance in the wake of this alarming incident.
